Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Big Oaks NWR has been designated as a Globally Important Bird Area because of its value to migratory birds. Located on 50,000 acres five miles north of Madison on Highway 421 (on the closed Jefferson Proving Ground). Portions of the refuge are open for wildlife observation, photography, fishing, hunting, interpretation, and environmental education.

Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery

et on the bluffs overlooking the Ohio River and adjacent to Clifty Falls State Park. The cemetery is a beautiful tribute to the veterans of the State of Indiana. Encompassing more than 120 acres, the cemetery allows burial space for more than 40,000 in-ground burials and 2000 spaces in the columbarium wall.

Broadway Fountain

Broadway Fountain The fountain was originally cast in iron and exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. Purchased by a Madison Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and presented to the City of Madison in 1886. The fountain was recast in bronze as a community Bicentennial project in 1976.

We invite you to explore the history of the Underground Railroad in Southeast Indiana. The routes traveled by the runaway slaves and the locations of the safe houses that hid them from danger are all but invisible to us now. Learning about the people and places that constituted Southeast Indiana’s trails to freedom, however, will help you “see” the Underground Railroad.

African Methodist Episcopal (AME)Church

Historic Eleutherian College (National Historic Landmark)

This majestic stone classroom and chapel building was completed in 1855. Est. in 1848, the college’s rich history includes association with the Underground Railroad, Neil’s Creek Anti-Slavery Society and the Civil War. This early American institution of higher learning was established on the principal of equal education to all, regardless of gender or race.

Lanier-Schofield House

Lanier Mansion (National Historic Landmark)

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994, this 1844 Greek Revival mansion was designed by architect Francis Costigan for financier and railroad magnate James F.D. Lanier. Recent restoration made possible largely by funding from private sources - has recaptured the Mansions 19th century splendor.

Features 1844 Greek Revival home of James F.D. Lanier, gift shop, recreated formal gardens, public restrooms. The Mansion, referred to as the “crown jewel” of Madison’s Historic District, is a National Historic Landmark.
