It’s a Bridge!

It’s a Bridge!
June 19, 2013 Visit Madison

Everyone is excited to see the new Milton-Madison Bridge project moving along.  Just a couple of weeks ago, the new bridge opened for traffic on temporary piers.  Even though this happened late in the evening, there was a line of cars waiting to try out the new bridge.  It’s big and wide!

As you can imagine, this is a big deal for our community.  The distance between bridges on our stretch of the Ohio River is about 40 miles – this makes for a long detour.  Picturesque but long.

Recently, the Wall Street Journal did an article on bridge engineer, Murray Johnson from Vancouver British Columbia.  The slide of the Milton-Madison Bridge will be his biggest challenge to date.  The new bridge is 2,427 feet long, weighs 15,260 tons and this is believed to be the longest bridge slide in the world.  I think of him as a “bridge whisperer”.

In July, the whole town is celebrating the Bridge Slide with a party at Bicentennial Park.  Because we don’t know the exact date of the slide, we’ve decided to party the evening of July 27th even though the actual slide will be later in the summer.  There will be an attempt to set a world record at the Crystal Beach slide,

debut of an original song by Rusty Bladen, a showing of “CARS”, and slide related foods (burger sliders, pizza sliders, etc.)

The Madison Art Club is getting into the spirit with:

SO…slide on in to Madison and party!
