Madison Regatta 2008 Media Kit
July 4 – 6
Madison Indiana can document their first boat racing event to 1911. The inaugural Indiana Governor’s Cup Madison Regatta was held in 1951, and historic Madison Indiana has hosted the world’s fastest race boats, Unlimited Hydroplanes, to this day. The Madison Regatta draws in excess of 60,000 spectators, making it one of the largest sporting events in Indiana. Sanctioned by the American Boat Racing Association, the Madison Regatta draws spectators to the banks of the Ohio River to witness deck-to-deck boat racing at 200 miles per hour.
Hollywood again visited our town to produce the 2005 movie “Madison†starring Jim Caviezel, and filmed on location in Madison. The movie re-created the 1971 Miss Madison Gold Cup victory. Miss Madison (now sponsored by Oh Boy! Oberto) is the world’s only community-owned Unlimited Hydroplane and continues racing for the 13,000 residents of Madison. A new high-tech Miss Madison hit the water for the first time last year and posted two impressive wins in her first season. 2008 promises to be even more exciting!
This year will be the 58th running of the Indiana Governor’s Cup Madison Regatta scheduled for July 4 – 6. Coupled with the racing excitement is the Madison Regatta Festival, a week-long series of events which includes a traditional Main Street Parade, fantastic Air Show displays, a July 4th Fireworks Extravaganza held on Saturday evening, Four nights of Musical Entertainment, Festive Foods, Interactive Exhibits, and much more!
