πΈ Photo by: Brent SpryThe late Charles Kuralt once wrote: βthe princess of the rivers β¦ is unquestionably Madison, Indiana. It is the most beautiful river town in America.β The curator of a Michigan museum, when he first saw Madison, said, βPut a fence around the entire town and donβt let anyone touch anything in it!β During World War II the Office of War Information selected Madison as the βtypical American townβ and made movies of it in 32 languages to distribute around the world to remind our troops what they were fighting for. Life magazine chose Madison as the most pleasant small town in the country in which to live. Its 19th-century architecture, a mix of several styles, has been praised as the most beautiful in the Midwest, and its setting on the banks of the Ohio River, against a backdrop of wooded hills and limestone bluffs, is equally lovely. In 2006, the entire town was designated a National Historic Landmark District. Obviously, if youβre going to tour Indiana, Madison is one place you shouldnβt miss.
