School’s Out, What’s there to do?

May 30, 2013 By VisitMadison Leave a Comment

Sound familiar?  There are couple of opportunities in June for you to keep the kids amused for a couple of days.  The first is the Jefferson County Historical Society Summer Camp for Kids, June 17-21.  There are 2 sessions, 9-11am or 12:30-2:30pm.  Each day will have a theme involving crafts, books, food, games, and music.  You’ll learn about and plant some native Indiana plants, hear about early settlers and try foods they may have eaten, create and play with old-fashioned games and toys, work on a straw bale house (with H.M.I.), go on a trolley ride-tour historic Madison and then make ice cream!  More activities include sewing, weaving, hunting fossils, etc.as time allows.  It’s $25.00 and must be prepaid to hold place.  Siblings are only $20.  You can register by calling JoAnne Spiller, Director of Education, at 265-2335 or 701-9449.  Make sure the kids dress in tennis shoes & play clothing.

On June 26 & 27, sign the kids up for ArchiCamp, winner of the Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History!  This year’s theme is Urban Gardens.  ArchiCamp is for kids ages 8-13 and the hours are 9am-4pm each day.

Explore Madison’s exciting architecture and stories at ArchiCamp!  Help create a period garden at the Talbott-Hyatt Garden.  Visit urban gardens and learn the many ways they were used. Create a ‘plein air’ painting of the Lanier Mansion’s garden.  Plant your own terrarium and herb garden.  Take a dip in the historic Crystal Beach swimming pool.

Meet both days at the Madison-Lanier Convention & Visitors Bureau, rain or shine. Snacks and drinks are provided — please bring a sack lunch. Registration is $30.00 and includes materials, tours and admission fees.

To reserve your ArchiCamp place, complete the form below and return it by June 19th. Camp is limited to 20 kids, so don’t delay! For more information contact Rhonda Deeg at 812-265-2967 or Laura Renwick at 812-284-4534.
