August 21, 2013 Visit Madison

Madison has always had a love for and interest in the arts.  As far back as the first Chautauqua Camp Meeting in 1901, Madison has been a gathering place for these creative and talented people.  In the last few years, we’ve seen significant growth in our art community with more galleries/studios opening in the downtown.  Here’s a little taste of our art community.

Madison Art Club was founded by 12 young artists in 1949 and still thrives today.  Their new location, Art on Main, at 309 W. Main Street features the works of regional artists.  They also offer lessons, demonstrations, and hold a variety of events throughout the year.

During Main Street’s Fourth Friday Art Jam, the Art Club moves outside for a fun ” Alley Art Fair”.  Everyone gets the chance to find some great art and enjoy the evening.

The Artisans Gallery at Madison Tableworks at 325 E. Main Street features fine arts and crafts by area artists.  They also specialize in unique handcrafted custom tables.  At the Carlson Art Studio and Fine Art Gallery, 301 Jefferson Street, Kevin offers a large selection of area landscapes, usually in oils.  Gallery 115 at 115 E. Main Street is home to artist Eric Phagan.  Phagan’s works range from area landscapes and streetscapes  to figural sculptures.  At Steamboat House Art, 738 W. Third Street, Barbara Walters-Dixon specializes in local scenes, barns, steamboats, animals and more.  Dixon offers originals, prints and notecards.

Handcrafted and Homegrown by Hoosier Hands in Southeast Indiana is a compilation of artists that can be seen in local art galleries, or are available by appointment. Madison’s Cliffs and Valley Artisan Trail features 24 arts-related stops (including 3 wineries) and 23 stops open by appointment only.  Many of the stops on the Cliffs and Valley Trail are concentrated in Madison’s downtown National Historic Landmark District where visitors will find an abundance of cafes, galleries and shops featuring local art and artists.
