Madison in the Movies Walking Tour
Movie Magic in Madison!
Nestled along the Ohio River in Southern Indiana, Madison is a captivating river town steeped in history, natural beauty, and vibrant community spirit. Established in 1809, Madison boasts the largest contiguous National Historic Landmark District in the United States, with over 1,300 preserved structures showcasing Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Victorian, and Prairie-style architecture along tree-lined streets.
Surrounded by scenic bluffs, meandering creeks, and cascading waterfalls, Madison’s landscape offers a stunning backdrop for any event or film project. The area’s rich agricultural heritage endures through century-old farms, while unique sites like an abandoned nuclear plant and a former military base with a historic neighborhood add to Madison’s distinctive character. The city also has one of the world’s steepest non-cog railroad inclines and over 40 miles of additional track. Situated on bluffs overlooking the Ohio River Valley are the Madison State Hospital and beautiful, scenic Hanover College.
Madison’s cinematic appeal was first recognized in 1943 with the war documentary The Town, filmed by the U.S. Office of War Information, Motion Picture Bureau. Hollywood returned in 1958 to film Some Came Running, featuring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Shirley MacLaine. In 2001, Madison starred in the family-friendly film Madison, spotlighting the beloved Miss Madison hydroplane.
This charming town is also the birthplace of Irene Dunne, the acclaimed actress and five-time Oscar nominee. Madison’s timeless beauty continues to attract filmmakers, artists, and visitors alike, earning accolades as the “Prettiest Small Town in America” and the “Best Preserved Town in the Midwest.”
Whether you’re here to host an event, capture the perfect shot, or simply explore, Madison offers warm hospitality, stunning scenery, and a wealth of activities year-round.
