Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge
Big Oaks NWR has been designated as a Globally Important Bird Area because of its value to migratory birds. Located five miles north of Madison on Highway 421. Portions of the refuge are open for wildlife observation, photography, hiking, fishing, hunting, interpretation, and environmental education.
Mid-Apr-Nov: Mon & Fri, 2nd & 4th Sat., 7am-4:30pm
April 26th, 28th, and 29th 5:30AM-2PM; May 4th, 5th, 11th, & 12th 5:30AM-2PM hours altered for hunting
Mandatory briefing and Access fee permit required ($3 daily, $15 annual); fee waived for holders of Migratory Bird Stamps, Interagency Access Pass, Interagency Senior Pass.

- Pick up a booklet and complete activities including word searches, scavenger hunts, drawing and more to earn your badge. Learn about the Refuge history, plants, animals, and management activities on Big Oaks NWR. It will be fun for the whole family. Booklets can be picked up at the gatehouse. They also have a backpack with field guides, magnifying glasses and binoculars that can be borrowed. Check open days and times.
