September is “Arts Month” in Madison, but one does not have to just be a spectator. There are often opportunities to create art, with the guidance of a trained professional, which is how I prefer to do it, so I don’t mess anything up.

If you are in town for the weekend and are looking for some productive fun check out these fun classes that I noticed while strolling down Main Street:

Village Lights Bookstore—110 E. Main Street
Bookmaking Workshop with Sandra and Lara Tokarski
Saturday, September, 14 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, September 15, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Learn the basic skills of bookbinding and create your own hand-bound journal. You can  stop by Village Lights to see an example before registering. Workshop instructors are Sandra Tokarski, Bloomington-based bookbinder and longstanding teacher of book arts at Pygmalion’s Art Supply, and Lara Tokarski, bookbinder and book repair specialist and a conservation technician with Indiana University Libraries Preservation Lab. Cost for the two-day workshop is $85 per person, with all materials included. A 50% deposit is requested at the time of registration. Advance registration is required.

Art on Main—309 West Main Street
Oil Painting with Richard Luschek
