Jefferson County History & Art Center
Home of Indiana’s Oldest Historical Society
The Jefferson County History & Art Center is located in the heart of Madison’s National Historic Landmark District and is home to the Jefferson County Historical Society, Indiana’s oldest historical society that was established in 1850.
Start your journey at their museum full of special & permanent exhibits containing the rich history of Madison and Jefferson County including our role in the civil war, the steam boat industry, and much more!
Did you know Madison was home to Indiana’s first railroad? In addition, we also boasted the steepest incline in the country at that time. Explore the restored 1895 Railroad Station Museum with a model of Madison’s early railroad and hop on the 1918 caboose.
The History & Art Center is conveniently located at the corner of 1st and Mill Street right next to the Visitor Center. Just look for the red caboose!
